dragon con

so i thought i would share my excitement with everyone. for the last three years, i have been going to comic conventions. my first year was wizard world of chicago, the second one was c2e2 and this year i'm going to dragon con. i'm very excited for dragon con this year! it's next weekend and it's in atlanta, GA.

why am i posting this here? well, writers, stan lee, timothy zhan, and tracy hickman are all going to be there. i'm totally excited about getting their signatures and meeting them. for those who don't know: stan lee is the original creator for many different comics at marvel, timothy zhan wrote the three books that come after the 6th star wars movie and tracy hickman is one of the authors for the dragonlance series.

i'm also totally excited for i'll be cosplaying for the first time. i'm going to wear a steampunk out fit. i'm wearing a corset, some black leggins, bullet casing, and some black riding boots. plus steampunk jewelry. i'm totally excited about it all. i'll post pictures of my outfit when i come back.

so over all i'm totally stoked and can't wait! i'll put some pictures here and i'll definatlly have pictures up on my flickr. hurray for conventions!

booklamp

so i've found this awesome website called booklamp that its kind of like pandora only for books. you type a genre/author/title of book and they find other books for you that relate to what you typed in there. so for example: if i type dragons of the hourglass mage by margaret weis and tracy hickman; i will get other books by the same authors and i will get books that have the same kind of themes in the book. like rocky terrain, physical injury and military campaign. there aren't a ton of books in the database, but there are a bunch. so it's a cool way to find more books to read that are similar to books you already like.

disney donates $500k and 8 thousand books

Disney is going to donate $500,000 and eight million books to First Book, a national nonprofit organization that provides new books to children in need.

Since its founding in 1992, First Book has distributed more than 85 million new books to children from low-income families in thousands of communities throughout the United States and Canada. First Book now distributes an average of more than 25,000 books per day. Disney Publishing Worldwide has worked with First Book since 1999, helping to get books into the hands of kids and their families. Last year, First Book distributed a total of 7.5 million books; the donation of eight million Disney books – including titles for the youngest readers up through teen series – will help First Book double this number.

"If you only ever read one book in your life I highly recommend...you keep your fucking mouth shut."

i know i've been a little behind in my sharing quotes, i'll have a post soon with a bunch more.

banned books in missouri

Republic High School in Republic, Mo., banned two books, including slaughterhouse-five by kurt vonnegut, after a parent complained that the books advocate principles contrary to the Bible. After a yearlong fight, the Republic district’s school board voted unanimously monday to ban Mr. Vonnegut’s book and sarah ockler's “Twenty Boy Summer,” based on the complaints of Republic resident wesley scroggins, a professor of management at missiouri state university, and the father of several home-schooled children.

edit: msnbc's today website stated that: Up to 150 students at a Missouri high school that ordered "Slaughterhouse-Five" pulled from its shelves can get a free copy of the novel, courtesy of the Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library.
